JUSTICE OF THE PEACE

Office Hours:
Monday, Wednesday & Thursday – 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.   Friday - Closed
Tuesday – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Liberty County Justice Court is located on the lower level of the Courthouse at 111 1st St. East in Chester, Montana.  The Justice of the Peace is elected every four years.

Activities of the office include:

  • Civil jurisdiction actions, if the sum claimed does not exceed $15,000

  • Small claims actions for amounts not exceeding $7,000

  • Criminal jurisdiction for misdemeanors not exceeding $1,000 or 1 year incarceration

  • Fish and Game statutes

  • Concurrent jurisdiction with the District Court for misdemeanors

  • Examining courts for preliminary hearings

  • Landlord-tenant disputes

  • Temporary restraining orders

  • Traffic citations

  • Pay Fines

Filing Fees

  • Civil Actions   – $50.00

  • Small Claims – $30.00
